Eurydice Speaks / Habla Eurídice

The hammock - Gustave Courbet
Orpheus, I tell you I'm not in hell, .......................................... Orfeo, te digo que no estoy en el infierno,
this place is called Maine, ....................................................... este lugar se llama Maine.
All winter the cold wind burns my face, .................................. Durante todo el invierno el viento helado me quema el rostro,
and I sweat, wading through all this snow. .............................. y yo sudo, hundiéndome en la nieve al caminar.
But it's spring now: ................................................................. Pero ahora es primavera:
sounds of snow melting, ......................................................... el ruido de la nieve al derretirse,
water dripping off eaves, flooding crocuses ............................ el gotear del agua en los aleros, anegando los azafranes
and jack-in-the-pulpits. ........................................................... y las arisemas.
Pussy willows, cattails, forsythia suddenly .............................. Sauces blancos, aneas, de pronto forsitias
awaken junipers tipped with pale new shoots. ........................ despabilados juníperos con nuevos brotes pálidos.
The wind flings pine cones my way. ........................................ El viento lanza piñas por mi camino.
Now walking along the coast ................................................... Al pasear ahora por la costa
I follow seagulls ...................................................................... sigo a las gaviotas
skimming waves and I focus ................................................... con mi cámara, gaviotas
on their bills in the foaming .................................................... que rozan las olas y yo afoco
water, they dip their bills, ........................................................ sus picos en el agua
I focus, they rise with limp silver ............................................. espumosa, hunden sus picos,
flashing in the sun as others come swooping .......................... afoco, se alzan con un plata mustio
down, I turn circling with my camera ...................................... que brilla al sol mientras otras se dejan
while waves rise and crash upon rocks .................................... caer, giro con mi cámara
flinging salty seaweed and mollusks; ...................................... al tiempo que las olas se alzan y revientan contra las piedras
chipping seashells upon cliffs ................................................... y lanzan algas saladas y moluscos;
waves crash and leave small pools of fish stranded... .............. moliendo conchas en los acantilados
Orpheus, I want to stay here .................................................... las olas revientan y dejan pequeños estanques de peces de peces varados...
with the smooth pebbles, ......................................................... Orfeo, quiero quedarme aquí
I want to stay here, at the ocean's edge .................................... con los suaves guijarros,
I have found someone new - ................................................... quiero quedarme aquí, en la orilla del océano
no god, but a quiet man who listens. ....................................... he encontrado a alguien nuevo
................................................................................................ - no dios, sino un hombre tranquilo que escucha.
