There is that moment ....................... Hay ese momento
when the young human child ............ en que el niño humano
stares ............................................. mira
at the young monkey child ................ al niño mono
who stares back - ............................ quien también lo mira:

Innocence facting ............................ Inocencia frente

Innocence in a space ........................ a inocencia en un espacio

where the young monkey child .......... en el que el niño mono
is not in captivity. ............................ no está en cautiverio.

There is purity ................................. Hay pureza
... clarity ............................................ claridad
there is a transparence ..................... hay una transparencia
... in this stare ................................. en esta mirada
which lasts a long time... ................. que dura mucho tiempo...

eyes of water .................................... ojos de agua
........... eyes of sky .................................... ojos de cielo
the soul can still fall through ............. el alma puede todavía caer allí
because the monkey .......................... porque el mono
has yet no learn fear - ........................ todavía tiene que aprender el miedo
and the human .................................. y el humano
has yet to learn fear - ......................... todavía tiene que aprender el miedo
.......... let alone arrogance. ........................ - sin mencionar la arrogancia.

Witnessing it all ................................ Al ver todo eso
one can count eyelashes ..................... uno puede contar las pestañas
one can count the snails ..................... uno puede contar los caracoles
in the grass ....................................... en el pasto
........... while waiting .................................. mientras está esperando
for eyes to blink ................................. que los ojos parpadeen
waiting to see who ............................. esperando ver quién
will look away first. ........................... desviará la vista primero.

Still the monkey looks ........................ Con todo, el mono no observa
at the human not in the same way ....... al humano de la misma manera
he would look at leaves ...................... en que vería las hojas
or at hos own siblings. ....................... o a sus propios hermanos.

And the human looks ........................ Y el humano observa
at the monkey knowing ...................... al mono sabiendo
this is some totally other being. .......... que éste es por entero otro ser.

And yet, there is such good will .......... Y sin embargo, es tal la buena voluntad
such curiosity brightening ................. tal la curiosidad que ilumina
...................... their faces. .................................................... sus rostros.

I would like to slip inside ................... Me gustaría deslizarme dentro
that stare to know ............................. de esa mirada, para saber
what the human child thinks ............. qué piensa el niño humano
what the monkey child thinks ............ qué piensa el niño mono
at that very moment. .................. ....... en ese preciso momento.

Remember, the human child .............. Recuerden, el niño humano
is at that age ..................................... está en esa edad
when he begins to use words .............. en que comienza a usar palabras
with power ....................................... con poder
but without the distance ..................... pero sin la distancia
of alphabets, of abstractions. .............. de los alfabetos, de las abstracciones.

Mention bread .................................. mencionen pan
and he wants .................................... y él quiere
a slice, buttered and with honey - ....... una rebanada, con mantequilla y miel
immediately. .................................... - en ese instante.

Mention the cat ................................ Mencionen a la gata
and he runs over ................................ y él corre
to awaken her. .......................... ....... a despertarla.

The word ......................................... La palabra
is the thing itself. .............................. es la cosa misma.

Language is simply ........................... El lenguaje es simplemente
a necessary music ............................. una música necesaria
suddenly connected ........................... conectada de pronto
............. to the child's own heartbeat. .................... con los propios latidos del niño.

While the young monkey child ............ Mientras que el pequeño niño mono
grows at a different rate, ..................... crece a un ritmo diferente,
looks a tree, a bush, ........................... observa un árbol, un matorral,
at the human child ............................. al niño humano
.............. and thinks... .................................. y piensa...
Who knows what? ............................. ¿Quién sabe lo que piensa?

What remains burning ...................... Lo que sigue encendido
is that moment ................................. es ese momento
of staring: ........................................ de la mirada:
the two newly formed heads ............... las dos cabezas ha poco formadas
balanced on fragile necks .................. titubeantes en frágiles cuellos
tilting towards each other, ................. inclinadas una hacia la otra,
the monkey face ................................ el rostro de mono
........ and the human face ............................ y el rostro humano
absorbing each other ........................ mutuamente absorbiéndose
with intense gentleness... .................. con una intensa delicadeza...
